SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known colloquially as Confession) frees us from our sins and challenges us to forgive those who sin against us.
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in him. In this sacrament, he prepares us to receive him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacrificial love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go at least once a year. The Church also encourages frequent confession to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the Church.
In the Liturgy of Penance, the elements are ordinarily these: a greeting and blessing from the priest, a reading from Scripture, the confession of sins, the giving and accepting of a penance, an act of contrition, the priest’s absolution, a proclamation of praise of God, and a dismissal.
Before celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation, one should prepare with an examination of conscience. You can find some examples of Examinations of Conscience here.
